Mapusa Police have registered a case against a woman from Aldona for allegedly cheating a Mapusa resident of Rs 16.89 lakh after failing to return money she had borrowed on the promise of repayment.

According to police, the complaint was filed by Madhavi Kiran Shetgaonkar of Mahadev Nagar, Khorlim, Mapusa.

Police said the alleged offence took place on March 13 at Khorlim, where the accused, identified as Joshna Deepak Sharmalkar of Carona, Aldona, allegedly convinced the complainant to give her money by assuring that it would be repaid.

Based on the assurance, the complainant allegedly transferred a total of Rs 16,89,145 to the accused through multiple transactions.

However, police said the accused allegedly failed to repay the amount despite repeated assurances, thereby cheating the complainant and committing criminal breach of trust.

Mapusa Police have registered an offence under Sections 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) and 318(2) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Police have also issued a notice to the accused under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
